What does the Law say?

Effective July 1st 2005, the Florida Administrative Code 64B9-15.011, and the nurse practice act, which governs the in-service training required by Certified Nursing Assistants, states that all Certified Nursing Assistants working in the state of Florida under their Certified Nursing Assistant certificate (even if working as a home health aide) must have 12 hours of in-service training every year and must include the "required" courses every two years. Additionally, home health aids working for any Medicare or Medicaid agency, must also maintain 12 in-service hours per year.

Confused?  Maybe this will help make it clear!

Under the Florida Administrative Code, every Certified Nursing Assistant working in the state of Florida must complete yearly in-services. These in-services must total 12 hours every year. You must maintain documentation that you actually completed the in-services for four (4) years as the state has the right to audit you to verify that you really did the courses.

Every two years, you must do the required courses. These required courses count toward that years requirement of 12 hours. The required courses are:

  1. CPR (you receive 4 in-service hours if you do your CPR training with Teach Me Now! by doing our 4 hour lecture class.)

  2. Medical Record documentation and Legal aspects for a Certified Nursing Assistant (1 hour if done with Teach Me Now)

  3. Communication with the cognitively impaired individual (1 hour if done with Teach Me Now)

  4. HIV Update (1 hour if done with Teach Me Now)

  5. Domestic Violence (1 hour if done with Teach Me Now)

  6. Prevention of Medication errors and safety (2 hour if done with Teach Me Now)

  7. Infection Control (1 hour if done with Teach Me Now)

  8. Patient / Resident Rights (1 hour if done with Teach Me Now)

These course may be completed through different providers for different amounts of hours for each. The total hours awarded for each course listed are for the course provided by Teach Me Now only. Just remember, you must total 12 hours for the year.

These courses must be done every two years to meet state requirements!

If you do all these required courses through Teach Me Now and also do your CPR training with us, you will have completed 12 in-service hours. We recommend to our students that they do the required courses the same year they do their CPR training so that they will know that the year their CPR is due, their required in-services are due as well. It makes it a bit easier to keep track of what in-services are due when.

Example:  In 2009 Linda did all the in-services listed above and completed her required 12 hours for 2009 as well as met the requirement of doing the mandatory courses. In 2010, Linda must again do 12 hours of in-service training for the year. Since Linda did the required courses in 2009 she may choose from any available course that interest her or relate to the job duties she may be currently providing as long as she makes sure she totals 12 in-service hours for the year of 2010.  In 2011 Linda will again  have to do the required courses since she has not done them since 2009 and her CPR training will be due as well. ( Remember with CPR training, the only way you can count this required course toward your in-service hours is if an additional certificate documenting in-service hours is given to you along with the regular CPR Card.)

How can we help?

Teach Me Now has available all the required courses on a Home Study basis. There is no more taking the day off to sit in a class you would rather not be taking. You can now do the courses in the comfort and privacy of your own home, or at work during break times. Just read over the information, complete a short test at the end of each education packet and either fax or mail the answer sheet back to us. We grade your test and mail you an in-service certificate. Copies of your In-service hours can be forwarded to your employer so that they are kept updated with your state requirements without inconveniencing you.

Available in different languages

To attempt to ensure that our students truly understand the educational materials, Teach Me Now has a large selection of our in-services translated into Spanish for those workers who are more comfortable dealing with printed materials in this language. Home Study In-Service Packets are available in Spanish at no additional charge but the Spanish version must be requested at the time the order is placed.

Ultimately, it is your responsibility to keep records of your in-service hours. Every class you take should get you a certificate you can keep for your records showing you completed the class. Any group or organization that is not willing to issue you a certificate of completion, may not be willing to give you a copy of it either if you are requested to provide proof to the state.

Remember, it is your responsibility to get these in-service hours. Employers are not required to provide you with these hours but you are required to have the courses to keep your certification in effect. If you do not get your required hours you could face legal and / or disciplinary action.

So how do I get these courses?

Teach Me Now now offers you the option of having your in-services mailed to you in a Home study Packet. All orders received Monday through Friday from 8am-5pm will be mailed out within 24 hours of you placing your order. You can then either mail or fax back the answer sheet for grading and to receive your certificate of completion.
